Health officials discuss how to keep your family safe from coronavirus
I needed to keep in poising boy to have communication. I see this even at in the health department. Staff wants to be, wants to know they don’t have time to really follow the news so closely. So that obvious of responsibility A little bit off after Health Department, What do we need to do about big events? So then, do we need to cancel them or when do we need to postpone those are all questions that we have at this time? I would also think that we have some responsibility for ourselves and our families, and that means that we need to start thinking about how, what what are we doing in regards to emergency preparedness? What do we do when we prepare for tornadoes? For flats, we usually have one or two weeks of food at home. We have some water at home. We make sure that we have the availability of our medicine that we may need. We can’t go to the drugstore from one day to the other. Those type off matches, I think, would be very appropriate to think about today. We’re getting calls about travel, and the best advice for now is to really check with the Center for Disease Control. This type of information is changing by the days as new countries are having your cases identified. Therefore, dependent CDC is making different travel recommendations we carry Can’t could carry hand sanitizers around with us. We could make sure that we do all those things that we are doing in the influence a season hand washing, covering your calf. Stay home when you are sick. Those things apply at this time. And let me just give you a quick glimpse what we are seeing in regards to influence a season this year. Looking over the last 10 years, This is the year with the highest number off confirmed influence of cases in Douglas County more than 6000 cases. As of last Friday, we have had to pediatric death. We have out nine outbreaks in long term care facilities. So all those prevention activities I would like everybody to be very serious and take them to heart. At this time, we still have the Corona virus information line for 44 34 100. That’s a line for the public for general questions that they can call us about, and we have we have people answering that line. So let me just end with this and then we are ready to answer some questions that you may have. We know it is best to prepare, and now is potentially the time to prepare and talk to all your friends and family about this. Thank you. Let’s ask. Let’s see. I have Dr Keith here and I have Chest and Frederick with the supervisor off epidemiology with me, and they may be able to answer some of the questions that you may have understand keeping the food supply. Why water in my house? I got that water. Why? Ready to my body? Water? These are concerned that the virus? No, it’s just a general recommendation that we usually say the bottled water for a week or two, maybe something that you should have. It’s more like an emergency kit where this route, and were any possible. The schools, I think, are working at this time also looking at their pandemic plant to see what have you decided at that time. And we developed those plans and he said, still true, and they are waiting off course from public health and to have the recommendation when they should close over and they should have smaller class sizes. Also on you asked a lot of question. Get or yeah, can you What specific issue out of you questioning? They? A bunch of you know, the answers are going to depend on the situation. They’re going to depend on the time, too. So at this time, I think what I am saying is, Prepare yourself, people. Pair. That’s all. There is not really an action I bring Piper prepared. I specifically mean a medication. Potentially food supply look atyour pandemic plan. If you are a business there, you really now is the time to look at your continuing off operations plans. What would we do if individuals are sick and only half of our staff can come? That’s each operation. Each business should have a pandemic influence. We’re working with just about everyone, so we send out letters guidelines to all the businesses that we have in our database, your activist schools to send them out guidelines to about all the plans. What should they look for? There’s a lot of information on the CDC dot gov website and we do not want to. We create but we want to take that information. It has been vetted by the best experts and then provide that information to our local organizations. Me, I know it’s a cold flu or the problem. You know, That’s a very good question, Tom and I think at this time the obvious used to say, Have you traveled to China last week? You have. You haven’t traveled in the travel history is really important. Or have you been around someone who has been identified as being Corona virus positive? Those are the two things at this time. They really they’ll make a healthcare. Rachael, look at you and say, Is this a time where we need to call public health? Because potentially, we may want to test this intimate when your words first, none of those they know. Oh, no, that’s what you’re saying. But the same time is it possible? Just get it. Group might happen that I could get it just from being around. You know, again, I would say we do not know enough about that case in California. So there are a lot of stipulations at this time, and we are all wondering Whoa, where did this person Actually, I think testing and what we hear from experts testing for Corona virus is still at the low level. And therefore, could it be that we are missing individuals in the community who therefore could spread the virus? And, you know, CDC is providing those type of tests, and that’s that’s one of the limiting factor set this time your department, We are in contact with them daily. Yeah, on a conference call in the morning with them and when the questions arise, sometimes more than once a day, Yes. Thorne. Yes. So all the 15 pay They have 15 individuals and to off them used to be in the bio containment unit. They have ever been able to move them back to the quarantine unit. So all 15 individuals Asaf today very comfortable in the quarantine unit and are doing well and that, I think is a great thing for us. You know, Nebraska Medicine has done some great things because they have trained. They really are the best in their field. So I feel very comfortable. And the results are showing that work, which is more fatal. Corona virus. You know, that’s a good question, and that’s a question that’s often ask and via, say, we’re talking about percentages at what influence at the mortality rate is potentially and you hear the real 0.1% all the time with Corona virus. But the issue. But the difficulty is nowadays, they say between 2 to 3% mortality. Wait, so it is. The mortality rate is high, But do we actually know? Do we collect data from all the individuals who have been infected with Corona virus? That’s still a question, and that’s why you hear, Sometimes the experts are not really giving you clear, clear answers. I love that with me. Why don’t we do this right? Your name? The issue with Corona, Virus said, is so different is it is a new virus and we don’t have any immunity. None of us have any immunity against the virus, which is quite different with influence of air. We have a vaccine. Okay, so what? I would say two individuals influences get your vaccine. So that’s what the differences and is there is so much unknown about Corona by Was the people under office and anxious about it? Lee learn. Everybody learns together at this time and we learn something new every day. There’s so much that me now do not know yet. Nervous and anxious you’re in. But how? Worries? No rest. I would not. Because of that I would not. Very more than if I live in a community that has no individuals with Corona Box because we know those individuals with Corona virus at Nebraska mutism medicine Very well contained. So I would say to our community that would not be a very that you need to have. But we all are worried that the virus is now going to be pandemic pretty soon, and I think that’s more they’re very about. And I would say to everyone, If you are prepared, you don’t need to wear. It’s those who are not prepared, who should Very you mentioned vaccinations. Any idea how close we are to a vaccine? Three experts will tell you it’s going to take 12 to 18 months for vaccine. Now there are some some trials in regards to anti viral drugs at Nebraska medicine, and those may be available soon. No, just me any has been done to see if this virus old dying. The only thing about that I have heard in that respect, Tom, is that people are saying, but we have the virus in Australia, and it’s warm, you know, straightly on now, so we don’t know, but there are studies going on that are looking at that. But that’s temperature have to do with this virus. No, I think we need to be prepared for it. Yes, both monitoring and the bit recently. We’re monitoring. Yeah. Just when you want to come here today. Um, So we’re currently actively monitoring travellers returning from affected countries, meaning that they report their fever and symptom history to us twice daily for 14 days. Post travel sense into January. We’ve had 84 travellers report to us. They had returned from one of the affected countries. Of those 84 we’ve monitored 71 46 of them have completed monitoring and we’re currently continuing the 14 day monitoring with 25 individuals. We do this for a couple of reasons. One is to make sure that the individual is aware of their health for those 14 days. Should they develop symptoms? Hopefully, they recognize that quickly. It provides communication with health authorities and should they develop symptoms that we can quickly give them recommendations to seek care for evaluation and testing. Uh, other than that, I’m happy to answer any questions using, like, hear themselves, right? So the presidential proclamation asked individuals returning from China to remain home individuals returning from these other countries, the state of Nebraska and Douglas County Health Department. We’re being a little more proactive even then what CDC is asking us to dio. CDC is recommending that these ineffable self monitor we’re asking them to report to us that they’ve returned from one of the affected countries in the last 14 days. When they do that, we do a quick risk assessment with them, and then we enroll them into a survey that actually will text them twice a day and email them and ask them for their symptoms. Should they have any in their temperature? But they’re still interacting were correct store. They’re fairly low risk. And that’s why that’s occurring countries what? You’re yes. So the countries that we’re seeing travellers return from primarily are China, Japan and Italy. Right now, those you are contracted A virus? No, a common denominator at the same time. Three. Yeah. Person more prone to none that I’m aware of. No. Yeah, they’re all you’re 17. Hero paid out, you know. That’s okay. So 71 of the 84 that have reported to us were monitored. So some of those individuals, they didn’t even need to be monitored because they had already been back in the States for 14 days. Um, and of the 46 that have completed their monitoring, everything’s fine. They never developed any symptoms. Yeah, completely out of precaution. Again. It’s too. You know, the hope is that there very aware of their health during those 14 days again, you know, having those daily reminders sent to them, you know, to take their temperature to assess themselves. Should they have any symptoms and then to them to be in constant communication with us, as the health authorities Should they developed symptoms? Something about three self reporting. Yeah. So some of those air in my numbers it it can get a little bit confusing because of those 35. Not all of them are going to require monitoring again. Some of them have returned from countries that are not seeing community. Why transmission? Some of those individuals have been back in the states for 14 days already, and they do not require any sort of monitor. And we’re continuing to enroll them in our monitoring system as we speak or yeah, feelings are you mean So, uh, if they self report, they can do that by either calling the health department of going to the state of Nebraska health departments link and complete a survey were notified of them. Will make contact with him and do a risk assessments. We’ll ask about travel. History will ask if they’ve had contact with somebody who’s been ill. They were in a hospital. Um, we’ll ask him at that time with their temperature is what their symptoms are. And then we’ll kind of explain the process we’re monitoring for the next 14 days. You want look right. It’s so we had an influx, you know, uh, right after February 3rd into January 1st of February, when the presidential proclamation was made. Now we’re seeing an influx again, since the state of Nebraska has released the call for individuals who have traveled to the affected countries and less and returned in the last 14 days to contact us, right? So I’m aware of right now 84 people that have self reported. That number, I suspect, will continue to grow the next few days. We keep hearing that and you you know why for two weeks long, of the people for six weeks do you want answers? Yeah. So there have been studies that have been done already on this virus, and the vast majority of cases have had maximum incubation periods of less than 14 days. So there is good evidence to support that You may have heard of few outliers, but we can’t based these decisions on outliers. We have lots of good information to show that if that should change then and I’m sure that recommendation would change. But right now we have plenty of evidence to tell us that the 14 days is the Mac in maximum period. If has I mean, how long for it to take its course person to get better? Be that, Yeah, yeah, and that’s That’s an important question, and we have all the answers yet that’s being studied very closely. But based on what we know about other viruses, they’re making some pretty conservative procedures for determining if someone isn’t isn’t contagious anymore. They can be tested. You can make sure that they don’t have any symptoms for a certain amount of client. But that kind of stuff is being looked bad recklessly. Right now, this virus woman we have with 19 then he better woman for a number. Really. I’ve seen no evidence to support that. It could be that a person just doesn’t shed the virus consistently throughout their illness. And perhaps if they were tested throughout the illness, they might have had a negative test. But that might just mean that they just didn’t shed the amount of virus in the back of their throat enough to be detected on the test that time. That’s one of the possibilities, I said boarding right. Sure, that’s a possibility. But that’s why we try to get information out through multiple method. People can be aware of their symptoms and know that they might be at risk. And if they have that information, hopefully they would call the doctor before they went in if they became ill. But we do try toe, do this with multiple ways because we know we’re not gonna catch everybody. Um, there. I think at this time in Nebraska, there seemed today. So what we will do, though it was be very careful about how we use them on dhe. They’re working very hard to to make sure that they have as many as I can. Self reporting home? Yeah. For people. What? Really? Um, the question is about people reporting from the travel without symptoms. Yeah, before people way, don’t ask people to self report for influenza for influenza. It’s, you know, we monitor that with by looking at laboratory test results and by getting information from doctors and hospitals on how many patients they see. So it’s not an individual investigation with influenza like it is with this, um, and for people recording, we put that message out and we say, Hey, this is an important issue and we’re asking you to self report to us because we want to help you prevent transmission in our community. You know, people want to do the right thing in general. And so they go ahead and do that out. Like, seriously, hurry. No. Are you talking about the preparedness list? Well, the masks issue, you know, we do know that there is. People are reporting that they’re having a hard time finding this. But you have to remember what we should be using masks for a lot of the use has probably not been necessary and really won’t help it all. For the, um, masks are really for people who are sick so that they don’t conference news on, um, if you are traveling on a plane or a you know, out, people do have that question. Should they be wearing a mask themselves? But what What’s really the best thing to do is just to get really obsessive about washing your hands. Because a lot of times people touch their eyes and nose, and now, without realizing it, so really think about that. Carry hand sanitizer around. That’s the best way to prevent it. Um, if you touch a public surface, make sure you wash your hands very quickly because you might touch your face. Wow, that’s a lot of majors. Yup, theirs first work. Rest, child. Yeah, guys are recommending that the war’s Calvin’s or were you not? No water, I think I think we got it at that point yet, eh? So let’s let’s wait a little bit. Let’s see how the next week, or to develop until we make those recommendations. The major event. Be safer, Siris. It might be a bigger venue. It will. It will make a difference. Yes, but also remember, this is a respiratory disease, so it is transferred to you by droplets. Droplets have a short distance 3 to 6 feet. So again it could be transmitted in an outdoor event that easily stay on service. That’s a good question. We are asking that question all the time, eh? So far, no good studies on that possible good being transported over from China. We have a what about my iPhone? The end. So the roster. There are experts who are talking about that, and they are saying very clearly that there step the virus Corona virus Family, which is the family off, hold viruses, so to say, or sauce or Merce, they are not surviving over long periods of time, so you shouldn’t be varied about. The virus can survive on packages from China off from anything yourself here. Well, that’s a good It’s a good question. It it’s not proven that hideous airborne really is droplets and droplets fall to the floor to the ground, not so that it is floating in the air. But that can change. Okay, it was You go to Mike. No. Justin Frederick F R E D E R I c k. Supervisor of communicable disease epidemiology Dr Anne Okies and any apostrophe k e e f e senior epidemiologist. That’s and being very frightened. One being that much work for the average person. Be right now. Take the question. I would say 2 to 3. I would say 2 to 3. Now, you know, I’m looking at the experts, but 22 yeah, things. Thank you.
