The turn turn reverses a marble:

foreshadowing

turns turns have more uses than just inverting a marble’s direction — later, we’ll see how we can use them as a fundamental computer component.

handedness

Unlike the path path, a turn turn is handed — it’s not symmetric. This means it has left-handed and right-handed variants.

handed turns

A ’s background colour tells you its handedness:

  • dark red are right-handed
  • dark blue are left-handed
  • black are symmetric

long turns

For moving longer distances we also have a variant piece, the long turn long turn:

long turn

Bear in mind that the long turn needs a path path or other placed in front of its middle section, or the marble will spill out.

lateral movement

We can use a turn turn to shift a marble left or right:

turn shunt

Again, we need to place a path path in front of the turn to prevent spillage.

This works in a pinch, but it’s clumsy — next, we’ll look at a better way to move marbles left and right.
